  1. Why timber windows are still the gold standard for period property renovations

When it comes to renovating a period or heritage property, few decisions are more important than choosing the right windows. Windows are one of the most visually distinctive elements of a traditional building, and selecting a product that respects the original design while meeting modern performance standards is critical.

For many conservation officers, architects, and discerning homeowners, timber windows remain the gold standard – and for good reason.

At Glyngary Joinery, we’ve spent decades crafting bespoke timber windows that enhance and preserve the unique character of period homes across the UK. Here’s why timber continues to be the top choice for period property renovations.

Aesthetic authenticity that other materials can’t match

One of the main reasons homeowners choose timber is its ability to faithfully replicate traditional window styles. Whether you’re restoring a Georgian townhouse, a Victorian villa, or an Edwardian terrace, timber allows for slim sightlines, authentic glazing bar layouts, and detailed mouldings that simply aren’t achievable with uPVC or aluminium.

Timber can be machined and finished to match original profiles exactly – a key requirement for projects in listed buildings and conservation areas, where planning authorities often insist on a like-for-like replacement. Using any other material can result in visual inconsistency or, in some cases, planning refusal.

    Tailor-made to suit the property

Unlike mass-produced alternatives, timber windows from Glyngary are made to order, allowing for complete design flexibility. We work with homeowners, architects, and contractors to recreate or reinterpret period designs, ensuring every window is a perfect fit in both form and function.

    We can accommodate:

    • Arched or curved frames
    • Narrow sash profiles
    • Traditional weights and pulleys
    • Decorative horns and glazing bars
    • Heritage ironmongery and finishes

This level of customisation is simply not possible with off-the-shelf materials.

    Long-term durability when built right

There’s a common misconception that timber windows are high maintenance and less durable than modern materials. The reality? Properly manufactured and professionally finished timber windows – like those made at Glyngary – can last for 60 years or more with basic maintenance.

Our timber is carefully selected for its strength and stability, engineered to resist warping, and treated with modern coatings that protect against moisture and UV damage. With regular cleaning and occasional refinishing, your windows will not only stand the test of time – they’ll grow in character and value.

    Improved energy efficiency and security

Today’s timber windows are worlds apart from their single-glazed, draughty predecessors. Our windows are manufactured with high-performance double or triple glazing, warm-edge spacers, and airtight seals to significantly reduce heat loss and energy consumption.

Security is also a priority. We incorporate robust locking systems and secure frame designs that meet or exceed UK standards – all without compromising the period styling.

    Sustainable and environmentally responsible

Timber is one of the most sustainable building materials available. It’s naturally renewable, stores carbon throughout its life, and has a much lower embodied energy compared to uPVC or aluminium. At Glyngary, we use responsibly sourced timber from certified suppliers and manufacture everything here in the UK – reducing transport emissions and supporting local jobs.

For homeowners conscious of their environmental impact, timber windows are the ideal choice.

    Supporting British craftsmanship

Every Glyngary timber window is handmade in our British workshop by skilled joiners who take immense pride in their craft. When you choose us, you’re not just investing in quality windows – you’re supporting local skills, apprenticeships, and heritage manufacturing.

It also means we’re on hand to provide expert advice, responsive customer service, and complete transparency throughout your project.

    Nothing matches timber

If you’re renovating a period home and want to preserve its character while upgrading its performance, nothing matches the beauty, flexibility, and longevity of timber windows. With Glyngary Joinery, you’re choosing more than a product – you’re choosing craftsmanship, heritage, and lasting value.

  3. The timeless appeal of timber windows and doors

In a world increasingly dominated by mass-produced uPVC and aluminium alternatives, timber windows and doors remain a top choice for homeowners, architects, and conservationists alike. Not only do they provide an elegant, timeless aesthetic, but they also offer significant long-term benefits, making them a worthwhile investment for any property.

The beauty and character of timber

One of the biggest draws of timber windows and doors is their natural beauty. Unlike synthetic materials, timber has unique grains, textures, and colour variations that add warmth and charm to a home. Whether you’re restoring a period property or enhancing a contemporary build, timber offers versatility to match any architectural style.

At Glyngary Joinery, we understand that no two homes are the same. Our skilled craftsmen create bespoke timber windows and doors tailored to your exact specifications, ensuring a perfect fit and finish every time.

    Superior thermal efficiency

Energy efficiency is a crucial factor when choosing windows and doors, and timber outperforms many other materials. Naturally insulating, timber helps to keep homes warm in winter and cool in summer, reducing energy consumption and lowering heating bills.

We use high-performance double and triple glazing in our timber products to further enhance thermal efficiency, meeting or exceeding modern building regulations.

    Sustainability – a greener choice

Sustainability is at the forefront of modern construction, and timber is one of the most environmentally friendly materials available. Responsibly sourced timber is renewable, biodegradable, and has a significantly lower carbon footprint compared to uPVC and aluminium.

At Glyngary, we only use sustainably sourced timber from well-managed forests, ensuring that our products are not only durable but also environmentally responsible.

    Unparalleled longevity and durability

A well-maintained timber window or door can last for decades, often surpassing the lifespan of uPVC alternatives. With advancements in protective coatings and finishes, modern timber products resist rot, warping, and weather damage better than ever before.

Our specialist finishing techniques ensure that our timber windows and doors withstand the test of time, requiring minimal upkeep while retaining their pristine appearance.

    Heritage and conservation benefits

For those living in listed buildings or conservation areas, maintaining the original character of a property is essential. Many local authorities require timber replacements to match the original design.

Glyngary Joinery has extensive experience in crafting historically accurate windows and doors that meet stringent planning requirements while incorporating modern performance benefits.

    Bespoke design and customisation

One of the greatest advantages of choosing timber is the ability to customise every detail. Whether you require intricate glazing bars, traditional sash windows, or contemporary bi-fold doors, timber provides unparalleled design flexibility.

Our expert team works closely with clients to bring their vision to life, offering a range of wood species, finishes, and glazing options to create unique, high-quality joinery solutions.

  4. Why Digital Marketing for Timber Window Installers Matters – and How Glyngary Can Help

Why digital marketing is essential for selling timber windows and doors – and how Glyngary’s free audit can help

In an increasingly digital world, businesses that don’t have a strong online presence risk falling behind. This is particularly true in the home improvement sector, where customer research and purchasing habits have drastically shifted toward digital channels. For installers and joinery companies selling premium timber windows and doors, the importance of digital marketing cannot be overstated.

We have recognised this challenge and are stepping in to help. Through our partnership with digital experts Nix Collective, Glyngary is now offering a free digital marketing fitness audit – designed specifically to support installers who want to win more business online but don’t know where to start.

The shift to digital: What homeowners expect

Today’s consumers begin nearly every buying journey online. In fact, according to recent industry data:

    • 81 percent of home improvement customers start their project research online, often using search engines, social media, or review sites before contacting a business.
    • 70 percent of customers make decisions based on online content, including testimonials, photos, and service details.
    • 64 percent of people are more likely to convert into paying customers after watching a video about a service or product.
    • 82 percent of homeowners prefer visual content like before-and-after photos to evaluate the quality of work.

For companies selling timber windows and doors – products that are highly visual and often part of aspirational home renovations – this shift to digital provides a major opportunity. But it also creates a challenge – if your business isn’t visible or engaging online, potential customers may never find you in the first place.

Why timber installers can’t afford to ignore digital marketing

Installers and joiners are busy people. Between managing projects, meeting customers, and delivering exceptional craftsmanship, marketing often takes a backseat. But this is where small investments can yield big returns.

Your online presence is your digital shopfront. If it’s out of date, hard to find, or poorly presented, it could be costing you thousands in missed opportunities. Conversely, a well-optimised website, active social media presence, and solid online reputation can significantly boost enquiries, particularly from high-end homeowners looking for premium timber solutions.

Even small changes – such as improving your Google Business Profile, sharing project photos on Instagram, or speeding up your website – can dramatically increase visibility and credibility.

Sustainability and style: The growing demand for timber

Another key trend driving interest in timber windows and doors is sustainability. More homeowners are looking for environmentally conscious building products, and timber, with its renewable and insulating properties, fits the bill perfectly.

At the same time, timber is increasingly associated with luxury and style. For heritage homes, high-end renovations, or listed buildings, PVCu and aluminium alternatives often don’t match the aesthetic appeal or performance of well-crafted timber products.

“Timber is having a real resurgence,” says Joe Trueman, Director at Glyngary Joinery. “It’s sustainable, it looks beautiful, and it performs exceptionally well. Installers who understand this shift and know how to market to the premium end of the market are already seeing the benefits.”

Glyngary’s support for installers: The free digital fitness audit

In response to these evolving trends and challenges, Glyngary has launched a powerful new initiative. Teaming up with Nix Collective, they are offering a free digital marketing fitness audit to installer customers.

This audit is designed to assess and improve your current online presence. It includes a review of:

    • Your website’s performance and user experience
    • Search engine visibility (SEO)
    • Social media engagement and branding
    • Digital content, imagery, and messaging
    • Local search visibility and reviews

The goal is simple – to help you get more high-quality leads from homeowners who are actively looking for premium timber window and door solutions.

“We know many of our trade partners offer an outstanding service but struggle to get seen online,” says Joe Trueman. “This free audit is about helping them succeed – by making small but meaningful improvements to how they present themselves digitally.”

Part of a bigger picture: Glyngary’s ‘help to sell’ philosophy

The launch of this digital audit builds on Glyngary’s broader mission to support its installer customers. Beyond supplying top-quality timber products, Glyngary has long offered a range of sales tools and marketing resources, including:

    • Product brochures and POS materials
    • High-resolution photography and video content
    • A digital asset library for social media and websites
    • Sample products for showroom use

Now, with the addition of expert digital strategy support, Glyngary is doubling down on its commitment to helping installers grow and compete – even in uncertain times.

“We want to make sure our partners not only have the best products, but also the best support when it comes to marketing and sales,” says Joe. “This is about long-term success.”

    How to Access the Audit

If you’re a timber window and door installer looking to generate more online enquiries, improve your digital visibility, or simply see where you stand, Glyngary’s free audit is the ideal starting point.

  5. Glyngary invests £60,000 in cutting-edge quoting software

Cheshire-based timber window and door specialist Glyngary Joinery has invested £60,000 in a state-of-the-art quoting and ordering platform, which officially went live in April. The move marks the latest milestone in Glyngary’s ongoing programme of investment, designed to enhance support for its growing network of installers and resellers.

The new system delivers fast, accurate, and visually engaging trade quotations, streamlining the ordering process and boosting efficiency at every stage. Its standout feature, e-quote, enables trade partners to generate own-branded, professional quotes – with their own pricing and extras added – in just a few clicks. Complete with built-in production and delivery tracking, the software significantly improves project planning, turnaround times, and customer service.

This major digital upgrade follows a series of strategic improvements at Glyngary, including a comprehensive rebrand, new website, enhanced marketing materials, and expanded team – all aimed at making it easier for partners to sell the company’s handcrafted timber windows and doors.

“This is a key part of our wider growth strategy,” said Joe Trueman, Director at Glyngary Joinery. “We’ve chosen and tailored this software with our customers in mind. Our partners need accurate, timely quotes and simple tools to help them win business. This new system delivers on both fronts.

“The premium sector – where timber products thrive – is resilient and growing. While the middle market can be unpredictable, we believe targeting the high end offers greater stability. Timber is back in demand thanks to its sustainability and energy efficiency benefits. But many installers still stick to uPVC and aluminium, often because they think timber is too complex. Our goal is to simplify that journey, and this software does exactly that.”

In addition to receiving their trade quote, Glyngary’s partners will now receive a secure link to their personalised e-quote portal, where they can apply their logo, adjust pricing, add installation costs, and input customer details. The result is a smooth, professional quoting process from manufacturer to installer to homeowner.

Glyngary has experienced rapid growth since its rebrand in October 2024, and this latest investment ensures the company is well-equipped to support that momentum with scalable, streamlined systems.

  8. Sustainability of timber: From growth to greatness

As the world moves towards more sustainable building practices, timber continues to stand out as one of the most environmentally friendly materials available. From responsible forestry management to its energy-efficient properties, timber has a remarkable lifecycle that makes it an excellent choice for both homeowners and the construction industry.

At Glyngary, we are committed to providing high-quality timber products that not only enhance the beauty of homes but also contribute to a greener future.

    Timber: A renewable resource

Unlike many building materials that rely on finite resources, timber is a truly renewable material. Sustainable forestry ensures that trees harvested for construction are replaced through replanting and natural regeneration.

In Europe alone, forests are growing at a rate of approximately 661,000 hectares per year, meaning that more timber is being grown than harvested. This growth highlights how modern forestry techniques are supporting long-term sustainability while continuing to meet increasing demand.

Carbon sequestration & low environmental impact

One of the key environmental benefits of timber is its ability to act as a carbon sink. Trees absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere during their growth, storing carbon within their structure. Even after being harvested and used in construction, timber continues to store carbon, significantly reducing the carbon footprint of buildings.

Research from the Timber Trade Federation suggests that every cubic metre of timber used in construction can store approximately one tonne of CO2. In contrast, alternative building materials such as concrete and steel have much higher carbon footprints due to the energy-intensive processes required for their production.

    Energy efficiency and thermal performance

Timber isn’t just environmentally friendly in its sourcing – it also contributes to energy-efficient buildings. Timber has natural insulating properties, meaning homes and buildings constructed with timber frames and windows require less energy for heating and cooling. This not only reduces energy consumption but also helps homeowners lower their utility bills.

Compared to materials such as aluminium or uPVC, timber has a much lower thermal conductivity, making it an ideal choice for windows, doors, and structural elements. With sustainability at the forefront of modern building design, timber’s ability to improve energy efficiency makes it an even more attractive option.

    Sustainable timber in construction

Sustainability certifications such as PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) ensure that timber used in construction comes from responsibly managed sources. Certified timber guarantees that forests are not overexploited, biodiversity is preserved, and local communities benefit from forestry practices.

Glyngary is dedicated to sourcing sustainable timber for our windows, doors, and joinery products. Our commitment to high-quality, responsibly sourced materials means that our customers can enjoy the aesthetic and practical benefits of timber while supporting environmentally responsible manufacturing.

The future of timber in a sustainable world

As governments and industries seek ways to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable building materials, timber is set to play an increasingly important role. Its renewability, carbon storage capabilities, and energy efficiency make it a key component in the future of eco-friendly construction.

By choosing timber products from Glyngary, you are making an investment in sustainability, quality, and timeless craftsmanship. With timber, we can build a future that is both beautiful and environmentally responsible – from growth to greatness.

  9. 10 Reasons Real Timber Outperforms Replicas Every Time

When it comes to windows and doors, choosing the right materials can significantly impact customer satisfaction and project longevity. While uPVC and aluminium replicas are popular, genuine timber windows and doors consistently outshine their alternatives. Here are ten compelling reasons why timber outperforms replicas, making it the ideal choice.

    1. Unmatched aesthetic appeal

Timber has a natural beauty that synthetic materials struggle to replicate. Its rich textures, warm tones, and heritage charm create a timeless look that enhances any property. While uPVC and aluminium attempt to mimic timber through foils and finishes, these imitations lack the depth, authenticity, and tactile quality of real wood.

    2. Superior thermal insulation

Timber is an excellent natural insulator, offering outstanding thermal performance. Modern timber windows, especially when combined with advanced glazing, deliver excellent U-values that help maintain comfortable indoor temperatures and reduce energy costs. Unlike timber, aluminium requires thermal breaks to improve insulation, and uPVC often falls short of timber’s natural efficiency.

    3. Longevity and durability

High-quality, treated timber products such as Accoya are designed for longevity, boasting resistance to rot, swelling, and warping. While uPVC and aluminium often need replacement after 20-30 years, timber windows can last over 60 years with proper care. This durability translates to better long-term value and reduced waste.

    4. Environmental sustainability

Sustainability is a growing concern, and timber is one of the most eco-friendly building materials available. When sourced from responsibly managed forests, it is renewable, biodegradable, and has a significantly lower carbon footprint than uPVC or aluminium. Additionally, timber products like Accoya contribute to carbon sequestration, absorbing CO₂ throughout their lifecycle.

    5. Design flexibility

Timber offers unparalleled versatility in design. Whether you need traditional sash windows for a heritage property or sleek, modern frames for contemporary architecture, timber can be crafted to meet virtually any requirement. While uPVC and aluminium are limited in design options, timber’s adaptability allows for bespoke solutions that suit any aesthetic.

    6. Acoustic excellence

Timber’s density makes it an exceptional material for soundproofing. This natural property helps reduce external noise, creating quieter indoor environments. For properties in busy urban areas or near main roads, timber windows and doors offer a superior solution compared to uPVC and aluminium alternatives.

    7. Repairability and longevity

Unlike synthetic materials, timber is highly repairable. Scratches, dents, and minor decay can be fixed with ease, preserving the window or door for years to come. In contrast, damaged uPVC and aluminium frames often require full replacement, resulting in higher costs and material waste over time.

    8. Resistance to thermal expansion

Timber is remarkably stable across varying temperatures, minimising the risk of warping or distortion. uPVC, on the other hand, expands and contracts significantly with temperature changes, which can lead to cracks or misalignment. Aluminium, while more stable than uPVC, can also suffer from temperature-induced stress without proper design adjustments.

    9. Enhanced property value

Real timber windows and doors elevate a property’s aesthetic and functional appeal, which can increase its market value. Buyers often associate timber with craftsmanship, durability, and sophistication. Replica materials, while functional, do not carry the same premium perception.

    10. Health and indoor air quality

Timber is a natural material that does not emit harmful VOCs (volatile organic compounds), ensuring healthier indoor air quality. In contrast, some synthetic materials may off-gas over time, potentially affecting air quality and occupant health.

Why timber is the superior choice

Replicas may offer lower upfront costs, but real timber windows and doors deliver superior performance, beauty, and longevity. For installers and fabricators, offering timber products not only meets growing demand for quality and sustainability but also sets their projects apart. By choosing timber, you invest in a material that consistently exceeds expectations – every time.

  10. Replicas vs. Real Timber: Breaking Down the Myths

In the world of windows and doors, the choice between materials is often influenced by long-standing myths and misconceptions. Genuine timber windows and doors, known for their timeless appeal and unmatched quality, are frequently overshadowed by these myths, leading some to opt for replica materials such as uPVC or composites.

Here we debunk common myths surrounding real timber and highlight why it remains a superior choice for both traditional and modern applications.

Myth 1: Timber windows are prone to rot and have a short lifespan

One of the most pervasive myths about timber windows is their supposed susceptibility to rot and short lifespan. This misconception stems from experiences with untreated or poorly maintained timber products of the past. However, advancements in timber treatment and manufacturing have revolutionised the durability of modern timber windows.

High-quality timbers, such as Accoya, are specifically engineered for longevity, offering resistance to rot, moisture, and pests. Accoya timber, for example, is treated through a process called acetylation, making it highly stable and durable. When properly maintained, modern timber windows can last for more than 60 years, with many still functioning well beyond that timeframe.

By investing in well-crafted, treated timber products, homeowners and builders can avoid the issues that plagued earlier, untreated timber windows.

Myth 2: Timber windows require excessive maintenance

Another widely held belief is that timber windows demand constant maintenance to stay in good condition. This may have been true decades ago, but the reality today is far different. Modern finishes and paints have greatly reduced maintenance requirements, offering excellent protection against weathering and UV exposure.

Timber windows treated with microporous paints or stains can go 8-10 years without requiring a repaint, depending on environmental conditions. Simple, periodic cleaning and occasional touch-ups are usually sufficient to keep timber windows looking pristine.

In contrast, some replica materials like uPVC may discolor or warp over time, often necessitating full replacement after 20-30 years. Timber, therefore, not only offers lower long-term maintenance costs but also provides greater longevity.

Myth 3: Timber windows are not energy efficient

A common misconception is that timber windows lack the energy efficiency of modern materials like uPVC. However, wood is a natural insulator and can outperform many synthetic alternatives in thermal performance. Timber windows, when paired with modern glazing technologies, achieve excellent U-values, helping to minimise heat loss and reduce energy bills.

In fact, timber windows can exceed building regulations for energy efficiency, making them an ideal choice for eco-conscious homeowners. Furthermore, the thermal efficiency of timber frames remains consistent over time, unlike some synthetic materials that degrade with prolonged exposure to temperature extremes.

Myth 4: Timber windows are more expensive than alternatives

The perception that timber windows are prohibitively expensive often deters potential buyers. While the initial cost of timber windows can be higher than uPVC or composite options, their long-term value tells a different story. Timber windows are incredibly durable and, when maintained properly, can last a lifetime.

In contrast, replica materials may need to be replaced every 20-30 years, leading to higher overall costs. Timber’s longevity and timeless aesthetic also contribute to the property’s value, making it a smart investment for homeowners looking to enhance their home’s appeal and functionality.

Myth 5: Timber windows are unsuitable for modern designs

Timber windows are often associated with historic or traditional properties, leading some to believe they are unsuitable for contemporary designs. This could not be further from the truth. The versatility of timber allows it to be crafted into a wide range of styles, from traditional sash windows to sleek, modern designs.

With custom finishes, stains, and colors available, timber windows can be tailored to complement any architectural style. Their natural warmth and elegance bring character to modern properties while maintaining the minimalist aesthetic often sought in contemporary designs.

Myth 6: Replica materials are more eco-friendly

Some argue that replica materials like uPVC are more sustainable because they require less maintenance and last longer. However, this argument ignores the significant environmental impact of synthetic materials. uPVC is derived from non-renewable resources, and its production and disposal involve harmful chemicals that contribute to pollution.
